Question 115601: This problem is under the section in my book under Logarithmic Functions.
The largest recorded magnitude of earthquakes have been between 8 and 9 on the richter scale. Find the cooresponding intensities in terms of lo (o being the base)
Does anyone know how to work this problem.
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The largest recorded magnitude of earthquakes have been between 8 and 9 on the richter scale. Find the cooresponding intensities in terms of lo (o being the base)
-----------
General Formula: R = I/Io where R is the Ricter reading, I is the intensity
of the earthquake, Io is the minimum detectible intensity of the seismometer.
----------------
For R = 10^8
I = R*Io
I = 10^8 Io
---------------
For R = 10^9
I = R*Io
I = 10^9*Io
