Question 1137467: Hi tutors, if anyone has time to help me set up and solve this BMI problem, I would be grateful.
The federal government has developed the body mass index (BMI) to determine ideal weights. A person's BMI is directly proportional to his or her weight in pounds and inversely proportional to the square of his or her height in inches. (A BMI of 19 to 25 corresponds to a healthy weight.) A 6-foot-tall person weighing 177 lb has BMI 24. Find the BMI (to the nearest whole number) of a person whose weight is 170 lb and whose height is 64 in.

For me, the easiest way to solve these proportion problems is to look at each factor and see how it changes the end measurement.
In this problem, BMI is directly proportional to body weight. The reference weight is 177; the new weight is 170. So the BMI will get multiplied by 170/177.
BMI is also inversely proportional to the square of the height in inches. The reference height is 72 inches (6 feet); the new height is 64 inches. So the BMI will get divided by (64/72)^2 = (8/9)^2 = 64/81.
The BMI of a person whose weight is 170 pounds and whose height is 64 inches is 29, to the nearest whole number.
