Question 1133584: Granite which is crushed has a specific gravity of 2.8(2.8 times as heavy as water). Find weight of 1 cu. yd. if the voids are 40%. (Voids are spaces between the portions of the granite).
Not sure how to solve.
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the reference is the maximum density of water which is equal to 1 gram per cubic centimeter.
granite has a specific gravity of 2.8 which means it's density is 2.8 times the density of the reference.
that would indicate that the density of granite is equal to 2.8 grams per cubic centimeter.
you have a piece of granite that measures 1 cubic yard.
1 cubic yard is equal to 764555 cubic centimeters.
if there were no voids, the granite would weigh 2.8 grams per cubic centimeter * 764555 cubic centimeters = 2140754 grams.
since there are 40% void spaces in the granite, then the net weight of the granite would be .6 * 2.8 * 764555 = 1284452.4 grams.
that's what i think it would be based on the factors that i was able to research through the web plus what was given.
