This number be equal to the sum when twelve more than nine minus fifteen is added to four times the number of paces to the treasure. Dig ye only once, for if te dig in the wrong spot, the treasure will disappear.

let p = the no. of paces to the treasure
+ 17 = (12+9-15) + 4p
+ 17 = 6 + 4p
6p + 2(17) = 2(6+4p)
6p + 34 = 12 + 8p
34 - 12 = 8p - 6p
22 = 2p
p = 22/2
p = 11 paces west to the treasure
