Question 1122442: Hi
tank x and tank y were completely filled with water. 1/5 of the volume of water in tank x and 1/3 of the volume of water in tank y were equal to 350ml. When one fifth of the water in tank x was poured out the total volume in both tanks was 1200ml.
Find the volume of each tank.
thanks

.
From the condition, you have these two equations in 2 unknowns

 + = 350. (1)

 + = 1200. (2)

Multiply eq(1) by 4 (both sides). Keep equation (2) as is. You will get

 + = 1400. (1')

 + = 1200. (2')

Now subtract eq(2') from eq(1'). You will get

          = 200,

which implies y = 600.

Then from (2) = 1200 - 600 = 600; hence. x = = 750.

Answer. Tanker X volume is 750 mL. Tanker y volume is 600 mL.

Solved.

I used the  Elimination  method to solve the system of equations.

So,  on the way you learned on how the  Elimination method works.
