Question 1113546: The density of oxygen is 16 times as great as hydrogen.
Velocity of sound in hydrogen is 4200 fps.
Velocities of sounds in gases are inversely as the sq. rt. of the gases' densities.
Determine time a sound takes to travel from one end to the other of an oxygen filled tube, 1000 ft. in length.
Distance / rate = time.
Unsure how to solve. Non-homework.

The density of oxygen is 16 times as great as hydrogen.
Velocity of sound in hydrogen is 4200 fps.
Velocities of sounds in gases are inversely as the sq. rt. of the gases' densities.
Determine time a sound takes to travel from one end to the other of an oxygen filled tube, 1000 ft. in length.
------------
Velocities of sounds in gases are inversely proportional the sq. rt. of the gases' densities.
============================
r = k/sqrt(x) --- x = density
4200 = k/sqrt(H) --- H = density of hydrogen
k = 4200(sqrt(H))
For Oxygen, r = k/sqrt(16H) = (4200*sqrt(H))/sqrt(16H)
r = (4200*sqrt(H))/sqrt(16)*sqrt(H) = 4200/sqrt(16) = 4200/4
r = 1050 ft/sec
=======================
t = d/r = 1000/1050 = 20/21 seconds
