Question 1111792: Help me solve this word problem: The last event in the Policeman's Olympics is the relay race in which six team members must run an equal portion of a 10 1/2 mile course. How many miles must each team member run in the relay?
Its a fraction word problem.
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
10 and 1/2 mile course is equal to 21/2
divie that by 6 is the same as multiplying by 1/6.
you get 21/2 * 1/6 = 21/12
simplify that to get 7/4.
each member runs 7/4 miles.
6 * 6/4 = 42/4 = 10 and 1/2.
solution checks out.
each of the 6 members runs 7/4 miles which is equal to 1 and 3/4 miles.
6 * 1 and 3/4 is equal to 6 + 18/4 which is equal to 6 + 4 and 2/4 which is equal to 10 and 1/2.
