Question 110825: One number is 5 times another. If the sum of their reciprocals is 1/5 , find the two numbers.
Answer by edjones(8007) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A) x=5y
B) 1/x + 1/y =1/5
5y+5x=xy multiply each side by 5xy to eliminate fractions.
5y+5*5y=5y^2 substitute 5y for x.
5y^2-30y=0
5y(y-6)=0
y=0, y=6
Y=0 is not an answer because of division by zero in equation B).
So, y=6
A) x=5*6=30
Always check:
1/30 +1/6=1/5 true
