Answer by ikleyn(52781)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
Step 1

Find their initial assets.

J + A = 360
J - A =  24
----------------Add the equations. You will get

2J =    360 + 24 = 384  ====>  J =  = 192.

Thus initially Jeremy had 192 dollars;  Alicia had  192 - 24 = 168 dollars.

Step 2

Let "x" = Jeremy spent.

Then Alicia spent 3x, and the condition says

168 - 3x = 0.5*(192-x).

Solve for x and then evaluate 192-x.
