First convert your question into equations. Let variables equal to numbers you don't know yet.
S=Cecilia's Salary
P=Money she gave her parents
T=Money she spent on TV
1) Cecilia's salary includes = P + T + 180
2)She spent $120 more on a tv than the amount she had given to her parents:
T = P + 120
3) (3/8)S = P
or
1)
2)
3)
Solve for each.
Combining 1+2
Adding Equation 3
Cecilia's total salary is $1200
Plug in to solve for P,T
Cecilia gave her parents $450
Plug in to solve for T
Cecilia spent $570 on her TV

The answer from the other tutor was fine. Here is a different approach to the problem.
Let her salary be x. Then...
she gave (3/8)x to her parents;
she spent (3/8)x+$120 on a TV;
she had $180 left
So
Her salary is $1200; 3/8 of that is $450; $120 more is $570.
She spent $570 on the TV.
