Mandy and jack had some sweets in the ratio of 5:7.
after mandy gave jack some sweets the ratio that mandy had to jack was 3:21.
If jack had 168 sweets at first how many sweets should he returne to mandy so that both have an equal number of sweets.
:
let x = the 1st multiplier
then
5x = original number of sweets that M had
and
7x = original number that J had
Given that J' number is 168, we can find the multiplier
7x = 168
x = 168/7
x = 24
therefore
5 * 24 = 120 sweets is the original number M had
and we know that 168 + 120 = 288 sweets altogether
:
let y = the 2nd multiplier
3y + 21y = 288
24y = 288
y = 288/24
y = 12
therefore
3*12 = 36 sweets M had after giving some to J
and
21*12 = 252 sweets J had after receiving some from M
"how many sweets should he returned to mandy so that both have an equal number of sweets.
let s = number to be transferred to accomplish this
36 + s = 252 - s
s + s = 252 - 36
2s = 216
s = 216/2
s = 108 sweets
