Question 1098774: A husky running a thousand mile race burns 5 3/8 calories in exertion for every 1 calorie burned for thermoregulation. It burns 11,200 calories per day. How many calories are burned from exertion and how many for thermoregulation (regulating body temperature)? Round to nearest whole number.
I need a formula please. I was thinking X + 5 3/8 = 11,200

Your formula is almost right; or maybe you were thinking the right formula but didn't write it correctly. If x amount of calories are burned for thermoregulation, then the amount burned for exertion is 5 and 3/8 times x.

The mixed number makes it awkward to describe a method for solving the problem. So let's make an equivalent ratio by multiplying both numbers by 8 and say that for each amount 8x of calories burned for thermoregulation, the amount burned for exertion is 43x. Then a formula that will get you to the answer is

The numbers 8x and 43x tell us that, out of every 51 calories burned, 8 are for thermoregulation and 43 are for exertion.

That in turn means the calories burned for thermoregulation are 8/51 of the total and the calories burned for exertion are 43/51 of the total.

So if the total number of calories burned is 11,200, then the number burned for thermoregulation is (approximately) and the number burned for exertion is
