Question 109526: A 100 pound watermelon is 95 percent water. It is dehydrated until it is 90 percent water. What is its weight of dehydration?
Answer by edjones(8007) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
weight of water/weight of melon = % of water. Assuming water and non-water portions of melon weigh the same.
95/100=.95
.
Let x=weight of water lost.
(95-x)/(100-x)=.9
95-x=.9(100-x)
95-x=90-.9x
.1x=5
x=50 lbs!!!
Surprising answer.
So, the watermelon weighs 50 lbs.
.
Check:
45/50=.9
