each hose fills some fraction of the pool ... the fraction is the combined time divided by the individual time

example: if a hose took 60 minutes and the combined time was 20 minutes,
... then the hose would have filled 20/60 or 1/3

let x="combined time" ... (x/2)+(x/3)=1 ... multiplying by 6 gives 3x+2x=6
