Question 1059975: Derek is playing cards with his friends, and it is his turn to deal. A card has a mass of 2.3 g, and it slides 0.35 m along the table before it stops. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between the card and the table is 0.24, what was the initial speed of the card as it left Derek's hand?

This is not a math problem, it is a physics problem. This is a math website. If you provide all of the appropriate formulas, then it becomes a relatively simple arithmetic problem that you can do yourself. If you need help with this, go find a Physics Homework Help site.

Derek is playing cards with his friends, and it is his turn to deal. A card has a mass of 2.3 g, and it slides 0.35 m
along the table before it stops. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between the card and the table is 0.24,
what was the initial speed of the card as it left Derek's hand?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The initial kinetic energy is equal to the work by the friction force:
 = ,
where m is the mass, v is the initial speed of the card,  is the friction force and d is the distance the card slides.
Further,  = mg*k,
where g is the gravity acceleration and k is the coefficient of kinetic friction between the card and the table, equal to 0.24.
Combining this together you get
 = mg*k*d.
Cancel the factor m in both sides and substitute your data. You will get
 = g*k*d,
 =  = 1.284.
Answer.  1.284 m/s.
Solved.
John,
please do not be worried.
I can easily solve these Physics problems,
as easily as I can solve the Math school problems.
It is not without reason I am PhD in Physics and Mathematics.
