After 5 months of use, the value of
Pearl’s computer had dropped to $900. After
8 months, the value had gone down to $660.
a) Find a linear function that gives the value V(x) of
the computer after x months.
Points:: (5,900) ; (8,600)
slope = (900-600)/(5-8) = -100
Form:: V(x) = mx + b
Substitute for V(x),x, and m ; solve for "b"::
600 = -100*8 + b
b = 1400
---------------------
Equation: V(x) = -100x + 1400
----------------------------------------
b) What was the initial value of the computer?
V(0) = -100*0 + 1400 = $1400
----------------
