So

T = 8R

then Thomas will have T-28 paper cranes, 
and Raymond will have R+28

So T-28 = R+28

That gives us this system of two equations in
two unknowns:



Solve that by substituting 8R from the first equation
for T in the second equation:

8R-28 = R+28
   7R = 56
    R = 8

The substitute 8 for R in T=8R

T = 8(8)
T = 64

Let's check that so far:
The number of paper cranes that Thomas has, which is 64,
is 8 times that of Raymond, which is 8. 

If Thomas gives 28 paper cranes to Raymond, then Thomas
will have only 64-28 or 36, and Raymond will have 8+28 or 36,
so they will have the same number of paper cranes. 

So it is correct.  But the question is:

They have 8+64 or 72 paper cranes altogether.
