Question 1047267: A rack is to be constructed from steel. The stock used is 2 in. wide, 1/4 in. thick, and weighs 1.70 lbs. per linear foot. The rack weighs 80 lbs. Calculate amt. (nearest foot) of steel used.
80/ 1.70 = 47.058 = 47 ft.
Seems too simple.

That is because most people desperately want to consider all given data regardless of relevancy. The width and thickness of the steel are utterly irrelevant to the question asked. This wasn't so much an arithmetic problem as it was a lesson in evaluating and prioritizing information.
