Question 1043615: Ref. Question 1044571:
I still can't solve for x.
Ref. Question 1043539:
" What do you not understand in this solution? "
I don't understand:
y/x = 1/c
I don't understand the steps after:
x - x/c = b - a. (substitution for y).

Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x-(x/c)=x(1-(1/c)=x((c-1))/c, putting it over a common denominator.
x(c-1)/c=b-a
divide both sides by (c-1)/c
x=(b-a)/(c-1)/c, which when you invert, becomes (b-a)c/(c-1)=x

One of the original equations was .
, Multiplication Property of Equality
, Multiplicative Inverse Property
, combined steps for same two properties
We would choose whichever equation step we want to use for the other equation.
We should be able to do certain steps in our head, like knowing that the equality of two rational numbers is equivalent to the equality of their reciprocals; but if we forget this, we can still use the number properties we know in order to find the same relationship.
The other equation, after substitution, became ; do you recognize what was substituted? Big Hint shown above.
Objective is to solve for x.
Just as you can go forward with Distributive Property, you can also go backward to factorize.
, after substituted for y
, factorization, much like "combining like terms"
, applying common denominator because want a single rational expression...
