The office pool to buy lottery tickets has 10 members, each of whom chips in the same amount. One week, however, two members went on vacation, and the remaining eight had to give an extra dollar to make up the difference. How much money did they contribute.
:
Let x = amt each contributed when there were 10 people
:
10x = total amt required
:
10x = 8(x+1)
10x = 8x + 8
10x - 8x = 8
2x = 8
x = $4 contributed when there were 10: Total 10*4 = $40
:
Then $5 contributed when there were 8: Total 8*5 = $40
