Let's call their numbers, m and f.
Then we write
m + f = 38 and
m = f + 6
Now substitute the second one into the first one and get
f+6 + f = 38
2f + 6 = 38
2f = 32
f = 16 females which means there are
m = 16 + 6 = 22 males
