Use Pythagoras. One leg of the triangle is 1 mile, and the other leg is 40 miles.

rate = r mph; distance in 2 hrs = 2r miles

Faster plane DATA:
rate = r+20 mph ; distance in 2 hrs = 2r+40 miles

Horizontal distance between the planes:: 1 mile
Diagonal distance:: sqrt[1^2+40^2] = sqrt[1601] = 40.012 miles
