Question 1021802: How many gallons of a 20% antifreeze solution and a 10% antifreeze solution must be mixed to obtain 40 gallons of a 16% antifreeze solution?
Answer by addingup(3677) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x+y = 40 gallon. Subtract x on both sides:
y = 40-x
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
0.20x+0.10y = 0.16(40)
Substitute for y:
0.20x+0.10(40-x) = 0.16(40)
Multiply to eliminate parentheses
0.20x+4-0.10x = 6.4 subtract x on left and 4 on both sides
0.10x = 2.4 divide both sides by 0.10
x = 24 You need 24 gallon of the 20% solution and:
40-24 = 16 gallon of the 10% solution
