Question 1021569: A construction firm was hired to repaint a very large bridge. Written into the contract was a $2 million penalty if the bridge was not completed in 87 days; Their crew of 7 painted 1/3 of the bridge in 45 days. How many more painters should be hired to allow the crew to paint the rest of the bridge in the 42 remaining days?
-The class calculated that if 7 crew members painted 1/3 of the bridge in 45 days, then (1/3 bridge / 7 members) = 1/21 per crew member...
BUT: I wasn't sure what to do with that information, though.
Can you help me understand how to get to the solution? Thank you in advance.

Answer by macston(5194)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(1/21 per member)/(45 days)=1/945 bridge per man per day
.
2/3 bridge is 630/945 of the bridge:
At 1/945 bridge per man-day, we need 630 man-days in 42 days
.
630 man-days/42 days=15 men.
We need 15 painters to finish in time, and we have 7 men,
so we need 8 additional men.
