Question 1019606: The question is ... A residential water bill is based ona flat fee of $10.00 plus a charge of .75 for each 1000 gallons of water used. Find the number of gallons of water a family can use and have a monthly water bill less than $55.oo.
I think the equation should be something like
10.00 + .75x < 55.00
which gets me an answer of 60 gallons but it should be 60,000 gallons I feel. I don't know how to incorporate the per 1000 gallons into the equation.

I think the equation should be something like
10.00 + .75x < 55.00

It's 0.75 per 1,000 or (0.75/1,000)

If x is # of gallons the cost is (0.75/10,000)*x = 0.75(x/10,000)
--------------
So your equation is::
dollars + dollars < 55 dollars
10.00 + 0.75(x/1,000) < 55
-----
10,000 + 0.75x < 55000
------
0.75x < 45,000
------
x < 60,000
