Question 1016062: A car's speedometer is not always completely accurate. The error in this measurement is based on the number of miles per hour the car is traveling below or above 60mph. The error is measured by the function E(a)= [a-60], where a represents the actual speed of the car. Determine an appropriate domain and range for this function and graph on the set of axes.---This is absolute question but couldn't figure out how to make sign around number.

Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the absolute sign if | which is shift \ which is the key just to the right of ] on my keyboard.

the same symbols is used in front and behind the expression.

your equation becomes E(a) = |a-60|.

the domain of the function is all real values of x.

the range of the function is all real values of y greater than or equal to 0.

y will be equal to 0 when x is equal to 60.

the graph of the equation looks like this:

look below the graph for further comments.

$$$

the graph of this equation is symmetric about the line x = 60.

as you can see, when the value of y = 1000, x is equal to -940 or x = 1060.

x = -940 is 1000 units away from x = 60.

x = 1060 is 1000 units away from x = 60.
