Question 1008998: Shelia leaves on a long trip driving at a steady rate of 40 miles per hour. Her sister Allison leaves from the same location traveling to the same destination 2 hours later. She drives at a steady rate of 60 miles per hour. How long after Allison leaves home will she catch up to Shelia?

We can solve this using reason more than equations...
Sheila drives 80 miles in the two hours before Allison leaves...that is her head start.
Allison then covers 20 miles more than Sheila each hour thereafter.
It will take her 80/20 = 4 hours to catch up to her.
