: I cannot seem to get a mathematical equation out of this problem:
The Jr. senator can work his way through a bureaucratic labyrinth in 50 minutes. The Sr. senator can work his way through a bureaucratic labyrinth in 30 minutes. Working together, how many minutes would it take them to work their way through 12 bureaucratic labyrinths?
I have worked and worked and am just stuck! 50x + 30y = 12 and substituting y = (12 - 50x)/30 just ends me up with 12 = 12 (which I already know!). Please help - words problems are my weak area here. Thank you!

Answer by scott8148(6628)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
in 1 minute, the jr can do 1/50 and the sr can do 1/30 ... together they do 8/150 or 4/75

this means it takes them 75/4 minutes to do a whole labyrinth together

for 12, it would be 12(75/4) or 225 minutes

the equation is
