Question 1000534: Please write a formula of the form y=..... For determining the yards (represented by the variable y) given inches (represented by the variable i )
Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
there are 12 inches to a foot and 3 feet to a yard.
therefore there are 3 * 12 = 36 inches to a yard.
if i is the number of inches and y is the number of yards, you get two equations.
i = 36y
y = i/36

y = i/36 means:
given inches, divide by 36 to get yards.

i = 36y means:
given yards, multiply by 36 to get inches.

y = i/36 is the formula you are looking for.

y = i/36 can also be shown as y = i * 1/36
