Hi there,
If you think of a cylinder being
cut down one side and opened, it would become
a rectangle.
The circumference of the cylinder
would become either the 11 or the 8.
The height of the cylinder would be either
the 11 or the 8.
So the surface area of the outside would
equal 11 x 8 = 96 square units.

11*8 = 88 sq units (each side) regardless of what shape it's formed into.
