Hi there,
Make width = x
Length then = 5 + x
Perimeter = 2 x Length + 2 x Width
38 = 2(5 + x) + 2(x)
38 = 10 + 2x + 2x
Collect like terms
2x + 2x = 38 - 10
4x = 28
x = 7
So, Width = 7 inches
and Length = 12 inches
