Question 911437: Hello, I'm trying to help my son, who is in the 5th grade, with his math homework. I can't remember any of this stuff. He doesn't have anything to show how to do this problem. It's a word problem that they have to do and it doesn't have any samples. How would we go about solving this problem?
Juan is constructing a doghouse. He needs four pieces of plywood that are 2ft x 3ft rectangles. He needs two pieces that are 2ft x 2ft squares. If the plywood comes in 4ft x 8ft sheets, what is the minimum number of sheets of plywood needed?
Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Three methods
1)Which pieces can be combined to make a 4 ft* 8 ft sheet of plywood.
two 2 ft*3 ft make 4 by 6
You can add two 2*2 's to this to make one 4*8 sheet
and two 2*3 on another sheet will be the other
So we need at least two 4*8 sheets
2)
You can go to Home Depot or Lowes and have them solve this problem for you.
It would be a good experience for the boy too.
3)
Another way is make cut outs from paper and scale to inches instead of feet.
Cut out at least two 4*8 inches sheets of paper
Cut four pieces of paper that are 2 in x 3 in and
two pieces that are 2 in x 2 in and try to fit them on the 4 *8 in sheets
