Question 871487: Carl is making a rectangular dog run. He has 36 one-yard sections of fence that he plans to use to keep his dog inside. He wants the run to be as long as possible. What is the longest whole number length he can use for the run?

You can do this with visual thinking. Thirty six length units, each available as individual pieces. LONGEST dog run would use 1 piece each at opposite sides; and then there would be 34 pieces still ready to use for the other pair of sides. Each of them is 17 pieces. Obviously, longest length of the dog run is 17 yards.
