2x+2y=p, xy=A,

Substitute into A equation.

Use the one which makes sense, usually with the postive or add square root.

The perimeter of a soccer field is 316 meters. The area is 5,985 square meters. What are the dimensions of the field?

2L + 2W = 316____2(L + W) = 2(158)____L + W = 158_____L = 158 - W ----- eq (i)
LW = 5,985 ------------- eq (ii)
W(158 - W) = 5,985 ----- Substituting 158 - W for L in eq (ii)

(W - 95)(W - 63) = 0
W, or width = 95 OR W = 63
