Question 861703: a photo is cut so that its length is 2 cm longer than its width. it is then centered on a background to form a 3 cm border around the photo. the area of the background paper is 168. what are the dimensions of the photo
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let width of picture be x
length = x+2
3 cm border on all sides
width including the border = x+6
length including border = x+2+6=x+8
Area of background paper = 168 cm^2
Area = L*W
(x+6)(x+8)=168
x(x+8)+6(x+8)=168
x^2+8x+6x+48=168
x^2+14x+48=168
x^2+!4x-120=0
x^2+20x-6x-120=0
x(x+20)-6(x+20)=0
(x+20)(x-6)=0
x cannot be negative
x= 6 , width
length = x+2= 8
6 by 8 cm
