Question 858616: the product of two numbers is 162. if their sum is 27, what is their ratio?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let the numbers be x & y
xy = 162
x=162/y
x+y=27
162/y + y=27
multiply equation by y
162 +y^2=27y
y^2-27y+162=0
y^2-18y-9y+162=0
y(y-18)-9(y-18)=0
(y-18)(y-9)=0
y= 18 OR 9
xy =162
when y = 18 x= 9
so x/y = 9/18 = 1/2
when y =9
x/y = 18/9 = 2/1
