Question 857871: A 12 foot rope is cut into two pieces so that one piece is 3 feet less than twice the length of the other piece. How long is each piece

Answer by JulietG(1812)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
12 = A + B
A = 2B - 3
Substitute the value of A from the second equation into the first.
12 = (2B-3) + B
Add
12 = 3B-3
Add 3 to each side
15 = 3B
Divide each side by 3
5 = B
.
If B is 5, then A must be 7.
.
Let's check:
A (which is 7) is 3 feet less than twice B (which is 5)
7 = (2*5) - 3
7 = 10-3
success!
