They were both approximating, just Madison was more accurate.

There are two possible answers, all depend on your teacher and the lesson.
First: Normally the card has a shape of a rectangle. It's likely that Madison measures the short side (width) and Eric measures the long side (the length) of the card.
Second: The difference is quite small: 3 and 2 3/4, so Eric may have rounded the number to a whole number and get 3, while Madison takes the exact value and doesn't round.
