The question is not a practical one, for something as large as a lake. A reasonable academic answer could be, count the tape-measure lengths along the width, and multiply by the number of units which the tape measure holds.

Maybe reasonable in practice for a pond, but not for a lake.

NUMBER 1: Put the bulk end under a heavy rock and tell your dog to swim to the other side with small end in mouth...or attach that end to a stick and have dog swim across then retrieve it from the dog and set it in the ground at the edge and return to find out the measurement.
NUMBER 2: Tie the small end to a sizable rock, leave lots of slack on the tape measure and toss the rock to the other side, if it falls in pond just reel it in and try again.
Number 3: Prob the most obvious way is to just get a friend and have him take the small end in hand and have him walk around the pond and place at edge while your able to read the measurement.
there or so many possible ways to do this the answer is infinite possible ways.
another faster way is just buy a laser pointer distance reader....done
