Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A rectangular garden is 10 feet by 12 feet.
A rectangular sidewalk 1 feet wide is built around the outside.
What is the area of the sidewalk? (draw a picture)
I drew the picture but I am still lost.
:
Find the overall dimensions which includes the side walk,
A 1 ft wide walk will add 2 ft to each dimension to the garden dimensions
(Your picture should show this fact)
:
12 by 14 is the overall dimension
then
12 * 14 = 168 sq/ft is the overall area
Find the area of the garden only
10 * 12 = 120 sq/ft
therefore
168 - 120 = 48 sq/ft is the area of the sidewalk

Look at the diagram which is one rectangle inside a slightly bigger
rectangle. Measure one side which includes the walk-way, the one foot
wide walkway adds one foot to each end of the side making the overall
dimension 2 feet longer. Does this explain it? CK
