Question 772212: I am having tremendous amounts of trouble on these geometry word problems on my algebra summer skills packet.
q: the side of one square is five times that of another square. the difference in the areas is 96. find the sum of the 2 areas of the 2 squares.
I dont understand what this means by the difference is 96, or how to add that to the formula of figuring that out.

Let x be the side of the 1st square. Then the side of second square is 5x.
The area of 1st square is x^2. The area of 2nd square is (5x)^2 = 25x^2
The difference of the areas is 96:
25x^2 - x^2 = 96
24x^2 = 96
x^2 = 4
x = 2
The side of first square is 2. The side of other square is 10.
The sum of areas of 2 squares is = 2^2 + 10^2 = 4 + 100 = 104.
