Question 772019: Let's say you had a 12 foot ladder and wanted to reach a 10 foot roof. How far away from the house could you place the ladder?
Answer by Cromlix(4381) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Consider the problem as a right angled
triangle.
Height of roof - vertical side
Ladder - Hypotenuse
Distance from house - base side
So (Height of Roof)^2 + (Distance from house)^2
= (Ladder length)^2
=> 10^2 + (Distance from house)^2 = 12^2
=> 100 + (Distance from house)^2 = 144
=> (Distance from house)^2 = 144 - 100
=> (Distance from house)^2 = 44
=> Distance from house = square root of 44
= 6.63 feet.
Hope this helps.
