Four years ago, one of my math wizards came up with a straight forward, if not simple, method of solving proportional problems like yours. I call it the Nicole n, named after her.
You are given
(1) a:b:c = 3:2:7 and since all ratios are equivalent (equal) so is
(2) a:b:c = 3n:2n:7n
Now treat the numbers 3n, 2n and 7n as if they are the amount of money each recieved. Then the statement that c received 120 more than a yields the equation
(3) 7n = 3n + 120 or
(4) 4n = 120 or
(5) n = 30
Put n into (2) we get
(6) a:b:c = 90:60:210
Therefore Abby got $90, Ben got $60 and Chuck got $210.
Note that Chuck got $120 more than Abby!
Couldn't be easier, could it!!!!
