Question 731275: I apologize for any confusion in advance. Thank you.
"The length of the side of a large square is 1 cm less than twice the length of the side of a small square. The area of the large square is 33 cm^2 more than the area of the small square. Find the length of the sides of the two squares."
I tried using the Quadratic Formula, and I began trying to solve for the larger square.
I tried to find A, B, and C using this method.
(2x-1)(2x-1)=33+x^2
4x^2-2x-2x+1=33+x^2
5x^2-4x-32=0
So A = 5, B = -4 C = -32
Then, I plugged in the numbers and tried to solve.
X=4+/- sqrt ( 16+640 ) Over10.
X=$=/- 25.6 Over 10.
X= 2.96, -2.16
I'm not sure what I did wrong. The day my Algebra teacher went over this I was absent, and she's been out sick for the past 2 days with the stomach flu. Thank you in advance for your help!
Answer by KMST(5328) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Minus signs always cause problems.
They are hard to see, easy to miss, and likely to change as you copy an equation to the next line, or to another page.
Then you need someone else to look for your mistake, because it is invisible to you.
You were doing OK all the way to
From there you should have added a to both sides to get
(You got instead).
Applying the quadratic formula to with , and you would get
--> -->
That would give you the solutions
