Question 717506: 25 inch piece of steel is cut into 3 pieces so the second piece is twice as long as the first piece and third piece is 1 inch more than 5 times the length of the first piece. What are the length of each piece?
Answer by jndarrell(58)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Decifer piece by piece
P1: x
P2: 2x
P3: 5x+1
Total 25in
Add all three pieces and set them equal to 25
x + 2x + 5x+1=25
Simplify
8x+1=25
Subtract the 1 from both sides of the equation
8x=24
Divide both sides by 8 to get the x alone
x=3
The question asked you to find the length of each piece, not just x. Take you newly found value and plug it back into the top. Add the three pieces together, they should equal the total length as your check. DON'T FORGET UNITS!
P1: 3 ft
P2: 6 ft
P3: 16ft
