Question 715391: Could you please help me with this geometry problem?
Problem: In triangle ABC, angle A is 5 times angle B, and angle C is 16 degrees less than angle B. What are the measures of the three angles?
My attempt: I tried to figure this problem out by forming an equation. I did A5=B
and got B/5. I took B/5 and tried the equation C- 16 degrees= B/5. I then multiplied 5 by each variable. I got 5c-80 degrees= B. I divided 5c and b by 5 and ended up with c-80 degrees= B/5... Here i got lost.. I know that i'm doing this wrong. I don't remember how to solve this problem...
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!
Answer by KMST(5328) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
USING ALGEBRA:
Let's call the measures of the angles (in degrees) , and
We know that the measures of the angles of a triangle add up to so
We translate "angle A is 5 times angle B" as
(or leaving out the optional middle dot symbol for multiplication).
We translate "angle C is 16 degrees less than angle B" as
Now we put together all we know.
The sum of the three angles will be
(I put the expressions for and in in parentheses, but those parentheses are not needed).
