Question 522662: I just submitted a question concerning spreading gravel in my driveway. I inadvertently asked how many "square yards" of gravel it would take instead of asking how many "CUBIC yards" it would take!! I am spreading gravel 3 inches deep, 12 feet wide and 900 feet long. I MAY decide to spread it 4 inches deep instead. I need to know how many CUBIC yards of material would be required in either scenario. What formula would I employ?

I am spreading gravel 3 inches deep, 12 feet wide and 900 feet long. I MAY decide to spread it 4 inches deep instead.
I need to know how many CUBIC yards of material would be required in either scenario.
:
Change 3 in to .25 ft
Find the vol in cu/ft; .25*12*900 = 2700 cu/ft
Change 2700 cu/ft to cu yds: 2700.27 = 100 cu yds for 3" thickness
:
Change 4 in to ft
Find the vol: (1/3)*12*900 = 3600 cu/ft
Change 3600 cu/ft to cu yds: 3600/27 = 133 cu yds for 4" thickness
