a) This one is so common that it has its own symbol "!", the nth number is "n!" or "n factorial" which is the product of the 1st n whole numbers.
b) Take differences: 3, 5, 7, 9. The odd numbers, which sum to squares, so just tweak the error:
nth term = n^2 -1.
