Presuming that "One piece is 24 less than double the other piece" ACTUALLY means "One piece is 24 INCHES less than double the other piece" proceed as follows:

Remembering that 24 inches is actually 2 feet, let represent the measure in feet of one of the pieces and then is the measure, in feet, of the other piece. Then:
