the 3 places form a right triangle , with m at the right angle and c->w as the hypotenuse

by Pythagoras , (c->m)^2 + (m->w)^2 = (c->w)^2

x^2 + (2x + 2)^2 = 13^2 ___ x^2 + 4x^2 + 8x + 4 = 169

5x^2 + 8x - 165 = 0

factoring ___ (5x + 33)(x - 5) = 0

x - 5 = 0 ___ x = 5
